Love At The Speed Of Email wins Writer’s Digest award

This post is sponsored by Grammarly. I used Grammarly to grammar check this post, because, while I am an award-winning author now, I am still not nearly wealthy enough to afford a full-time copy editor. And, let’s face it, I need one. So I received a fun email on Friday last week. It seems that Love at the Speed of Email was chosen as an Honorable Mention in the Life Stories category of the 21st Annual Writer’s Digest Self-Published Book Awards. The Writer’s Digest Self-Published Book Awards honor exemplary self-publishing. I don’t know how many people entered this year (books...

Looking for home after a global upbringing

It’s book month over on A Life Overseas!! I love books and I was thrilled be able to share a little about my latest book, Love At The Speed Of Email. I’m also giving away three electronic copies (PDF, MOBI, or EPUB versions available). You can find out how to enter over at the bottom of my post over on A Life Overseas. Love At The Speed Of Email is a memoir – the story of how I met my husband while he was in Papua New Guinea working for a humanitarian organization and I was in Los Angeles working as a stress management trainer. It’s more than a love story, though, it’s a...

Ten good things that have been happening

Often when I go quiet it’s because things are not going so well, but these last couple of weeks it’s been the opposite. Things are starting to go better. Here are ten good things that have happened lately. 1.  Friday night was my (yes, quite belated) book launch for Love At The Speed Of Email. We had drinks and a reading from 5-7pm at one of Luang Prabang’s nicest resorts, The Amantaka, and it was fabulous. Even the tropical storm that blew in just added to the atmosphere.  2.  The book is racking up some seriously lovely reviews on Amazon (and a bunch of them are from...

A conversation with Marianne Elliott on Zen Peacekeeper

A conversation with Marianne Elliott on Zen Peacekeeper

I’ve been spending too much time with family here (and, yes, too much time holding a coughing baby between the hours of 1 and 3:3oam) to write up the posts currently brewing in my head. But that’s OK, because today I have another treat for you instead. Today I’m being hosted on Marianne Elliott’s blog. Marianne is a writer, human rights advocate and yoga teacher. She is the author of Zen Under Fire (a book about her time working in Afghanistan that I’m looking forward to reading in the very near future) and a Huffington Post contributor. She describes her site as...

Love At The Speed Of Email on sale!

Love At The Speed Of Email on sale!

I was going to write all these travel-themed posts this week – pithy updates on our three flights to get to Australia, an excerpt from the book, maybe some lessons-learned for parents traveling solo with a baby. But. This is thetime in the last four days I’ve managed to open my laptop. Dominic has a cold and is refusing to eat or drink much or sleep alone (or, for that matter, sleep for more than half an hour at a time, day or night). Right now he’s in the guest bedroom of our long-suffering hosts down here in Canberra. My mother is rocking him and offering him juice. He is wailing. I...

In which Mike and I both answer questions about Love At The Speed Of Email

I’ve been skipping around the blogosphere a bit, dropping in on various people’s blogs to talk about Love At The Speed Of Email. It’s always fun to be a guest in someone else’s blog home, but my stop today was special. Rel was one of the first reviewers of my first book, My Hands Came Away Red, and we’ve kept in touch in the years since then. She usually blogs about fiction, so I’m honoured that she took the time to read Love and have me on her blog. Here’s how she introduced the interview. I “met” Lisa McKay online years ago, thrilled to...

“How do you feel about your child reading your memoir?” and other such questions

“How do you feel about your child reading your memoir?” and other such questions

So I was going to write about post-launch letdown this week (which has struck with a vengeance, despite the fact that the launch is going very well) but that’s going to have to wait. I’ve been very busy, you see, doing important things like putting tiny sock puppets on my toes to amuse His Royal Babyness. And trying to teach him the meaning of the phrases, “No, books stay on shelves” and “stay off the stairs” (totally failing on both those fronts, by the way). I’ve also been avoiding the computer in the afternoons and actually reading other people’s books for a change...

Snapshots from the Virtual Book Tour

Hi folks. Happy Tuesday. Hope you’ve started the week off with more sleep in your tank than I have. I’m totally jet lagged (or, rather, I have a teething baby, same end result). It’s been just over a week since Love At The Speed Of Email launched. What have I been doing? Well, snatching the odd nap here and there when our sick and fussy child temporarily loses his battle with sleep. And going out to dinner at one of the nicest restaurants in town to celebrate without baby (and managing to actually have a conversation with Mike for a full hour and a quarter before I got antsy and needed...

The word on the street during book launch week

Launch week for Love At The Speed Of Email is almost over and it’s been, well, a potpourri. Last night, for example, Mike set up a beautiful wine-o-clock on our deck to celebrate. There was the last tin of salmon that we bought when we were in Alaska two years ago. There was a chilled bottle of sauvignon blanc from New Zealand in a silver bucket. There were fried spring rolls with sweet chili dipping sauce from the night market, with sticky rice and grilled chicken. And … there was also a grumpy, overtired baby who refused to eat anything and spent much of the evening whining and crying...

Lao music, launch parties, and other elegant celebrations

Lao music, launch parties, and other elegant celebrations

What a whirlwind! Love At The Speed Of Email had a great launch day yesterday. Scores of people visited the launch announcement and a bunch of you clicked on over to buy a copy (thank you!!). I spent some thrilled moments watching you all help me share the news on facebook and twitter (again, thank you!!) and feeling overwhelmed by that happy sort of embarrassment that comes when you’re a bit the center of attention and you realize how many people care about you. And then there was the rest of the day. Because, you see, launching a book from Laos over the internet is a very abstract sort of...
